Salvador is in the GMT-3 time zone and currency of use is the Brazilian real.

Points of interests / things to see

Basilica Cathedral of San Salvador

The cathedral of San Salvador was originally the chapel of the convent of the Jesuits, but after the destruction of the first cathedral of the town and the separation of this church from its congregation it became a cathedral. The church was built in the fifteenth century outside the walls of the city with a material, the tapial, which was not well preserved and made the church to be rebuilt every so often. Finally, in 1572, the architect Mem de Sá erected a masonry building that is the temple that has reached our days, elevated with respect to the square where it is located and with a limestone facade. The bells, coming from Portugal, were added in the year 1581. The interior of the Cathedral of San Salvador is decorated with large painted murals depicting the passage of the Annunciation, the Coronation of the Virgin Mary and a scene of Jesus in the Temple. The interior of the vault is decorated with neatly carved wood, and the altars are covered in gold and represent scenes of the saints who fought against slavery. Rodin Bahia Museum

The Rodin Bahia Museum was set up to host a display of the work of Auguste Rodin, the first section of the Auguste Rodin museum that moved out of France. In this museum, 70 of the pieces sculpted by Rodin in plaster were exhibited. The building in which today it continues being a museum is a construction in eclectic style realized in 1912 known like Palacete Comendador Catharino, since it was the residence of this comendador during the time of the boom of the cacao. Currently the building is often known as the Palace of the Arts, Rodin's show served as a push for Salvador to have this magnificent museum surrounded by gardens with centuries-old trees and to rebuild the mansion that was in poor condition. The museum needed more space than the old mansion could offer, so a modern building with straight lines was built which is accessed by a walkway from the main building and combines two moments of history in a single place. The exhibitions that can now be enjoyed in the museum are usually temporary exhibitions dedicated to the work of local artists. Address: Rua da Graça 258, Salvador, Brazil. Hours: MV 13: 00-19: 00, SD 14: 00-19: 00 Price: free. Phone: +55 71 3117 6984 Website: http://www.palacetedasartes.ba.gov.br/

The passage of the years made that it lost its old attraction and that the neighborhood was transformed into an undesirable zone. But in 1980, when UNESCO decided to name it a World Heritage Site, the neighborhood was transformed again, the colonial buildings were restored and, little by little, the neighborhood returned to the attention thanks to its cultural interest. The neighborhood is one of the liveliest areas of the city, with a lot of nightlife. In addition, one of the most famous percussion bands of Salvador, Olodum, rehearses every Tuesday in the Teresa Batista square, being the ideal moment to listen to good music for free and to enjoy the movements of the Brazilians to the sound of samba.

In this way in the year 1745 the captain transferred to Brazil the replica of an image that is originally in the Portuguese city of Setúbal. The church of Our Lord of Bonfim is built in neoclassical style and the facade is Rococo style. The two lateral towers are a sample of the typical colonial constructions. When found on a hill and have large dimensions, the church stands out and can be seen from many points of the city. In Our Lord of Bonfim a tradition and religious custom takes place that attracts a lot of attention and usually be a reason to visit. The â € œFitas do seà ± or do Bonfimâ € are colorful ribbons with the name of the saint embroidered or printed on them. Currently it is tradition to tie them in the church gate as an offering, leaving a dance of colorful ribbons around the temple that attracts a lot of attention.
