Originally constructed in 1939, this cathedral took a full forty years to be completed. The building was officially dedicated on December twenty second of 1978. The building was designed by a French Architect by the name of George Mounier. The style of the church is Gothic-Roman. In total, five thousand people can attend service in this Cathedral. That makes it the third largest of its kind in all of Brazil. For those who choose, mass is offered everyday with the exception of Mondays. It is conveniently located just across the street from the popular Central Handicraft Market. You may notice the cathedral has some black spots on it. These are not decorative elements, but are a result of the humidity common in the area. The church is completely funded by the Catholic Church and receives no additional government funding. You can identify a number of different styles in the architecture. You will see the spear shaped towers which reflect the Gothic style and the square main cupola which is reminiscent of Roman churches. How to get there ?
The closest international airport in Pinto Martins. It was originally opened in 1998 and has been expanded to better serve the influx of visitors. Airlines which travel here fly to virtually every major city in Brazil as well as multiple cities throughout South America. This airport offers a large number of flights to Sao Paulo. You can fly from Lisboa via TAP daily to this airport, weekly from Amsterdam and Rome. At this time, there is a Delta flight from Miami to Pinto Martins, but Delta is not sure it will keep this option in the future. If you are traveling from abroad, be sure to leave an extra hour to accommodate the immigration needs. From the airport you can grab the urban bus 404 Aeroporto/Benfica which frequently travels between the airport and the city center. Once in the center, you’ll be able to grab a bus to virtually anywhere in Fortaleza. If you are coming in during the evening, it is not recommended that you take the bus. Another option is to grab a taxi from the airport. Airport taxis tend to be more expensive while regular taxis are more or less the same quality for a lower price. Regular taxis use the meter to determine the fare. It is hard to bargin for the cost of the ride from the airport, but once away from this main area, you may have more successes discussing the price.
