Presentation of the destination

Perfection all around

The beautiful Brazilian Fortaleza is a joy for everyone who visits. Full of wonderful beaches, gorgeous weather, and family friendly activities, there is no shortage of fun for visitors to this enchanting city. Although Fortaleza is relatively isolated from the other parts of Brazil it is one of Brazil’s largest cities. One of the reasons for its size is its economic attraction for people from Ceara and beyond. Known as a city with a thriving party life, rolling dunes, and fishing villages, Fortaleza is a diverse and complex city. The city stretches along twenty kilometers down the coast and about ten kilometers inland. The oldest part of town is called the Centro and has busy streets full of delightful shops.

Cachaca Museum

This museum is located in the Ypioca theme park. In the museum, you will be immersed in the history of Cachaca. Explore a wide collection of documents, pictures, bottles, spices, and maps depicting the history of this important drink. The reason the museum is located in a theme park is a familial connection between the drink and those which founded Ypioca. Ypioca is the name of the most popular brand of cachaca in Ceara. To enter the museum it costs R$16. It is open Wednesday to Sunday between 8:30 am to 5:00 p.m. You can call the museum directly at 85 3341-0407. Visit the website here:http://www.ypioca.com.br For those who are looking to explore the theme park portion of Ypioca, you will have a ton to explore. One of the unique elements of the park is the largest wooden barrel in the world. Other activities include paintball, archery, zip lining, and riding a speedboat. The guides here typically speak both Portuguese and English, so you can have a personal tour if you choose. Come to learn the story of a small traditional family which worked hard and has enjoyed extensive success. Stay for the thrilling fun to be had by all.

Fortaleza Cathedral

Originally constructed in 1939, this cathedral took a full forty years to be completed. The building was officially dedicated on December twenty second of 1978. The building was designed by a French Architect by the name of George Mounier. The style of the church is Gothic-Roman. In total, five thousand people can attend service in this Cathedral. That makes it the third largest of its kind in all of Brazil. For those who choose, mass is offered everyday with the exception of Mondays. It is conveniently located just across the street from the popular Central Handicraft Market. You may notice the cathedral has some black spots on it. These are not decorative elements, but are a result of the humidity common in the area. The church is completely funded by the Catholic Church and receives no additional government funding. You can identify a number of different styles in the architecture. You will see the spear shaped towers which reflect the Gothic style and the square main cupola which is reminiscent of Roman churches. Today a number of different religious activities take place. This cathedral is a popular place for visitors to come and appreciate the religious aspects of life in Fortaleza. Dragon of the Sea Cultural Center

This fascinating museum has a number of fascinating displays. This center is one of three such centers all connected to the Institute of Art and Culture of Ceara. This is the largest in the set. In total there are about 30,000 square meters of museum to explore here. The architecture of this center is distinct due to its bold lines. It is set in the old harbor area and is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and theaters. Inside you will immediately feel the fun and beautiful atmosphere created by locals and tourists alike. The majority of activities here are free or cost a very minimal amount. The center is open Tuesday to Friday from 8:30am to 9:30pm. During the weekend its open from 2:30pm to 9:30pm. There are lots of different exhibits to explore ranging from art movies, to a fascinating optical illusion created by a red bridge. Frequently you will find live music performances here as well. Typically on Sundays there are a lot of activities geared toward children. This museum is a lot of fun to explore, but don’t expect to see a lot of interpretive material in English. However, many of the exhibits transcend the language barrier, so you are sure to find something enjoyable to explore.

This beach is perfect for allowing yourself to get lost in time. You will spend some time crossing sand dunes to reach the beachside. When you get there, you will find yourself surrounded by Brazilian paradise. There are a number of delightful activities to explore at Jericoacoara Beach. If you can, try to plan your time so you can sit and relax as the sun sets on another gorgeous day in Jericoacoara. The dunes here make the beach particularly memorable and magical. If you enjoy flying kites, this area is particularly well suited to it. Windsurfing and kite boarding are also quite popular. The town here doesn’t have a single paved road. Everything has been left the natural sand which adds to the genuine magic to be found at Jericoacoara Beach. When the New York Times called Jericoacoara Beach one of the best in the world, they were not exaggerating. Come and experience it for yourself.

A popular souvenir from Morro Branco is a bottle filled with the various tones of sand.

Canoa Quebrada

This former fishing village became a popular tourist attraction thanks to hippies discovering it in the 1970s. It is located just one hundred and seventy five kilometers from Fortaleza. The landscape here is astounding and, thanks to its position on the equator, the weather is always nice. Those who enjoy explore the dunes can join a dune buggy tour. Other options include sailing on traditional fishing boats called jangadas, horseback riding, and kite surfing. You can also participate in hiking, capoeira, and cliff glidings. Falesias vermelhas

This impressive geological formation makes for a stunning landscape. Enjoy the cliffs and learn about the native fishermen here. How to get there ?

Flying to Fortaleza

The closest international airport in Pinto Martins. It was originally opened in 1998 and has been expanded to better serve the influx of visitors. Airlines which travel here fly to virtually every major city in Brazil as well as multiple cities throughout South America. This airport offers a large number of flights to Sao Paulo. You can fly from Lisboa via TAP daily to this airport, weekly from Amsterdam and Rome. At this time, there is a Delta flight from Miami to Pinto Martins, but Delta is not sure it will keep this option in the future. If you are traveling from abroad, be sure to leave an extra hour to accommodate the immigration needs. From the airport you can grab the urban bus 404 Aeroporto/Benfica which frequently travels between the airport and the city center. Once in the center, you’ll be able to grab a bus to virtually anywhere in Fortaleza. If you are coming in during the evening, it is not recommended that you take the bus. Another option is to grab a taxi from the airport. Airport taxis tend to be more expensive while regular taxis are more or less the same quality for a lower price. Regular taxis use the meter to determine the fare. It is hard to bargin for the cost of the ride from the airport, but once away from this main area, you may have more successes discussing the price.
