Presentation of the destination

Campinas

Campinas is a city in southeast Brazil. It is the fourteenth largest city in Brazil, with a population of over 1 million people. Its name means “grass fields” in Portuguese, which is fitting since the land the city was built upon was originally composed of rolling hills covered in grass and forests. The city was founded in 1774 and its official flag and crest feature the mythical phoenix, a bird that is a symbol of rebirth, because over a quarter of the city’s inhabitants were killed in a yellow fever epidemic in the 1800s, yet the city survived. In the early 19th century, the economy of Campinas was primarily focused on farming coffee, cotton, and sugarcane. Agricultural exports continue to be important to its economy today, though it is also home to many industries, such as textiles, car manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and electronics. It is also an important shopping area, with two of the largest malls in Brazil, and is home to the prestigious University of Campinas.

Points of interests / things to see

Bosque dos Jequitibás and Museu de História Natural

Bosque dos Jequitibás is a large park located in the center of Campinas. Much of it is an urban rainforest which resembles the natural state of the area before the city was constructed. Bosque dos Jequitibás opened in 1880 and is full of things to do and places to see. It contains a small zoo filled with regional animals, a municipal aquarium, and an environmental education center. It is also home to a popular natural history museum. The Museu de História Natural opened in the park in 1939. Its goal is to teach about local plants and animals and promote their conservation, in addition to teaching the public about the environment. This fascinating museum is full of displays featuring mammals, birds, fish, insects and reptiles. Its permanent exhibitions focus on a diverse array of topics including extinction, predation, defense, the animal kingdom, and even things as specific as animal tooth adaptations. Other exhibits look at the diversity of bird species, fossils, botany, and minerals. There are also several impressive dioramas of Brazilian ecosystems such as the Amazon rainforest.Location: Rua Coronel Quirino 2, Campinas (Bosque dos Jequitibás)Hours: Tues through Sun 9:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:30 (Museu de História Natural)Admission: R$2, free for children under 6 and adults over 60 (Museu de História Natural)Website: http://www.campinas.sp.gov.br/governo/cultura/museus/mhn/

Mercado Municipal de Campinas

If you love shopping, then don’t miss out on the Campinas City Market, known as Mercado Municipal de Campinas in Portuguese. This market opened in 1908 and is the oldest shopping center in the entire city. The market has even been officially recognized as a cultural and historical monument of the city. The building itself was a warehouse that was converted into the beautiful marketplace you see today by architect Ramos de Azevedo, who transformed it using elements of Neo-Moorish architectural style. It features nearly 150 stalls that provide shoppers with all kinds of different products, from foods to religious items, fishing equipment, birdcages, and even replacement parts for appliances. The market is filled with amazing smells that come from its spice and herb vendors, as well as freshly baked pastries that are perfect for a snack. If you’re wanting to cook a delicious meal, you can always pick up some fresh fish or meat from the fishmonger or butcher, or buy some fresh fruits and vegetables that have been grown locally. The vendors are known for selling good quality products at affordable prices, as well as being incredibly friendly.Location: Av. Parque Portugal and Lagoa do Taquaral

Parque Portugal is one of the most popular parks in Campinas. It was recently voted one of the city’s top attractions by locals, and takes in thousands of visitors each week. If you like sports, there are plenty of sports facilities, including trails for running, cycling, and walking, and areas to play basketball, football, volleyball, and hockey. The park also contains a planetarium, a science museum, an indoor sports stadium, and an open air auditorium that seats 2,700 people. You can also take a ride on the historical tramway built in 1972 or go kart racing. A favorite area of the park is the Lagoa Isaura Teles Alves de Lima, known as the Lagoa do Taquaral, which is a gorgeous lagoon surrounded by the wooded park areas. You can explore its waters by renting a paddle boat and see its many freshwater fish such as tilapia. It also holds a floating replica of a caravel, a small sailing ship used by 15th century Portuguese sailors. The replica is of the boat Anunciação, which was used by Pedro Alvares Cabral during his first sailing expedition to India in 1500. The lagoon is also used for the yearly Tucunacamp fishing competition and has held wakeboard competitions in the past.Location: Avenida Doutor Heitor Penteado, Campinas

Museu da Imagem e do Som de Campinas

One of the most unique museums that you can visit in Campinas is its Museum of Images and Sound, known as Museu da Imagem e do Som in Portuguese. The museum first opened to the public in 1975 and is located inside the Pálacio dos Azulejos, a historical building built in 1878 that is located in the center of Campinas. MIS, as the museum is known to locals, was created in order to share the audiovisual history of the city with its inhabitants and visitors. It contains an immense collection of photography, music, film, and technology related to the history of Campinas. Visitors will be fascinated by the interesting way that the museum presents the city’s history through thousands of images, sounds, and films. View the historic photographs or listen to some of the hundreds of sound recordings that include popular Brazilian music, jazz, operas, instrumental music, children’s music, language courses, radio programs, comedy programs, film soundtracks, and religious music. There is also a collection of recordings of sounds from indigenous communities in Brazil, as well as music by composers and groups from Campinas. If you’re a film fan, you can see many old film posters as well as a number of films of important historical events.Location: Rua Regente Feijó 859, CampinasHours: Tues through Fri 10:00 to 18:00Website: http://www.miscampinas.com.br/

Catedral Metropolitana de Campinas

The Catedral Metropolitana de Campinas is a large cathedral located in the center of Campinas. Its construction began in 1807, but it was not completed until 1883. The building is architecturally fascinating because it was made entirely from compressed clay using an old traditional construction technique called “taipa de pilão”, known as the “rammed earth” technique in English. The cathedral is one of the largest buildings in the world to be created using this unusual technique. Inside, the building is decorated in beautiful sculptures carved from dark jacaranda wood. Its bell tower also contains four bells that are over 100 years old.Location: Praça José Bonifácio, CampinasWebsite: http://catedralcampinas.com.br/wordpress/

Torre do Castelo

Torre do Castelo, known as Castle Tower in English, is a water tower built in the 1930s that is the highest point in the city of Campinas. It is one of the top tourist spots in Campinas due to the beautiful panoramic views of the city that are provided from the top of the tower, with signs that tell visitors about the places they can see from each window. The tower is one of the symbols of the city. It also houses an educational radio station and the Museu Histórico da Sanasa, a fascinating history museum.Location: Praça Vinte e Três de Outubro, Campinas

Planetário de Campinas

If you make a visit to Parque Portugal, be sure to stop by the city’s planetarium, also known as Planetário do Taquaral. It opened in 1987 and has a 60 seat auditorium with a large screen for projections. Travel through space and imagine new worlds as the projector simulates intergalactic travel and teaches you about the solar system. As you explore the universe, you can also learn about the origins of the stars and galaxies and see the sky from anywhere in the world. It is a fascinating experience for adults and children alike.Location: Avenida Doutor Heitor Penteado, CampinasHours: Sundays at 15:30 and 17:00Website: http://www.campinas.sp.gov.br/governo/cultura/museus/mdcc/

Parque Ecológico Monsenhor Emílio José Salim

On a nice day, stop by Parque Ecológico Monsenhor Emílio José Salim, a 247 acre ecological park located in Campinas. The park was formerly a coffee farm, and its gorgeous landscape was designed by famous landscaper Burle Max. You can still visit the former residence of the farm’s owners, which is now a museum. Its exhibits tell about life on the farm for the owners and workers alike and the differences in their lifestyles. It also features displays on local environment. There are also several walking trails, as well as sports facilities such as ball courts and fields and a playground for kids.Location: 5 km from the center of Campinas
