Xiamen is on the southeastern coast of Fujian Province in China. It is a picturesque seaport city and is the cleanest destination in the whole of China. Blessed with panoramic scenery and beaches lined with trees. This city is a university town, with ancient Buddhist temples, parks and art galleries. The weather is pleasant most of the year, as Xiamen enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate. There are typhoons during July to September. The annual temperature is 21 C and the rainfall is mainly during May to August. Summer months are from June to August and it is hot and wet, perfect for the beach!January is the coldest month. June is the time for the Phoenix Flower Tourist Festival, and if you are visiting in August, catch up on the Gulangyu Piano Festival. Xiamen hosts the China International Fair for Investment and Trade every September. The currency used in China is the Chinese Yuan, also called Renminbi.

Gulangyu island is a green island, where only electric vehicles are allowed. The visitor is free from pollution and noise. A peaceful setting with amazing panoramic views of the city. Gulangyu means the drum beat, it got it's name from the sound that the reef makes, when the water hits it. It sounds like the beating of a drum. There are over 20,000 people living on this island and they enjoy the calm and serene atmosphere, with the many Victorian style buildings. On the south side of the island is the Sunshine Rock. It is the highest point on the island. It got it's name from the sun-shaped formation in the granite. At the foot of the rock stands the memorial hall of Zheng Chenggong. The statue of Zheng Chenggong, a national hero was built in 1985 to commemorate his victory over the Dutch invaders, who had occupied Taiwan. This majestic statue stands at 15.7 meters on a rock that is 24 meters high. This island is on China top National Scenic Spots and is the most scenic area in the Fujian Province. Gulangyu has been known as the Island of Music, because of it's reputation for encouraging the art. Take the ferry boat to reach the island: 5 minutes ride.
The imposing Hulishan Fortress is 1 km south of Xiamen University. It was built in 1892 to keep out invasion from foreign imperialists. The highlight of the fort is a massive 19th century heavy artillery piece, produced by the Germans. This is the biggest coastal gun in China, it weight 60 tons with a length of 45 feet. An imposing feature at the fort, it was in use even during the anti-Japanese wars in 1935-1945. There are barracks and arsenals inside the fort and it now houses the Rongguang Museum with over 4000 exhibits. There are amazing natural rocks that look like it is a painting! The visitor will see ancient swords, and a mini-canon that is only 11cm long that was made by the Portuguese. On display are over 50 iron cannons from the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty, unearthed from the Xiamen waters. It has over 100 years of history of the rise and fall of this region. The base of this fort was made of camphor tree sap, glutinous rice, liquid brown sugar, clay and sand. There are many secret tunnels and trenches. South Putuo Temple is an important temple to the followers of the Buddhist faith. A beautiful temple that has history as long back as the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It is on the slope of the scenic Wulao Peaks, close to the Xiamen University and the Ferry Terminal to Gulangyu Island. An active temple, where there are over 200 monks residing on the premises. This temples see many visitors who visit the temple to worship the Buddha and Bodhisattva Guanyin. In 1644, during the Early Qing Dynasty, money was allotted to renovate the temple. This temple got it's name South Putuo Temple, because of it's location. It is located on the south of the Putuo Island and it is south of the Buddhist holy site Mount Putuo in Zhejiang Province. The three halls are the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Hall of Great Mercy and the Buddist Scripture Garret. A serene ambiance, where one feels at peace. Situated in the northeast of Fujian, Mount Wuyi is a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site. The picturesque beauty of the gorges of the Nine Bend River encouraged the construction in ancient times of temples and monasteries. Today, they may be in ruins, but they influenced the cultures of East Asia by providing the setting for the spread and advancement of neo-Confucianism. The visitor will be treated to spectacular landforms of red sandstone monoliths that stand over 200 meters above the riverbed. Check the archaeological sites that showcases the boat coffins, collapsed temples and monasteries and the ancient town of Chengcun. Take a ride on a bamboo raft and drift on the Nine Bend River, admire the biodiversity conservation that south-east China has undertaken to preserve the relict species that is native to China. The visitor can take a day's tour to the Biodiversity Conservation area to admire the scenery. The adventurous traveler can climb up the Heavenly Tours Peak in the morning to watch the rising sun that appears through the clouds. The Water Curtain Cave is the biggest rock cavern in the Wuyi Mountains, a picturesque sight with a slanting top, other interesting spots are the Eagle Beak Rock, Green Lion Rock, and Lotus Flower Peak. Transportation: Direct trains go to Mount Wuyi form Xiamen. You could rent a private car to visit this beautiful spot.
A rural area, the west of the Fujian Province has stretches of farmland and mountains. The Hakkas are an ethnic minority, who built these Tulou for their clan. These earth buildings are a phenomenal sight, they resemble donuts! There are about 20,000 standing today and the oldest one is 1200 years old! It is a living fossil and is in Hu Le Town. These multi-storey buildings could be five levels high and were made of earth, lime, glutinous rice, wood chips, bamboo and compressed into walls of two meters thick. Each Tulou was a shelter for over 100 people, who would share the same name. Families would live in rooms that overlooked the circular, open courtyard. Kitchens were downstairs with the living rooms and the ancestral shrine. A living concept that is used today in apartments around the world! The families would stock food and had wells inside the Tulou, so in case of danger, they locked themselves inside the building during the long sieges. The Fujian Earth Buildings are found around Yongding and Nanjing County. The best option is to hire a local vehicle. Cost of car: 400 yuan Reaching Yongding: Bus: The bus ride takes 3-4 hours. Train: Catch the train from Xiamen in the afternoon and reach Yongding before midnight. You could get a room in a Tulou!
A beautiful road in a scenic city. The best way to connect with the soul of a city is to take a walk or ride a bicycle. Bicycles are easy to hire, but you will have to return it to the same venue. Cycle past pristine beaches with soft sand and a clean shore. You can stop at any of the beaches that catch your fancy and take a swim or just listen to the rhythm of the waves. A perfect spot to capture photographs of the shoreline or take a kite boarding lessons. This path will take you past the International Marina, Exhibition Center, Arts Center and the Xiamen University.
Seafood is famous in Xiamen and it is the freshest you will taste! From the Qing Dynasty, prawns, crabs, and local fish have played an important part in the diet. The cuisine has a distinct taste that is a little sweet and sour, but less salty. The secret to their unique flavor is the use of the red distiller's grain for flavoring. Vegetable dishes are popular in the South Putuo Temple, because of the traditional Buddhist diet. This unique museum is the only one in China that has been devoted to displaying the different models of the piano. The Piano Museum is located on Gulangyu Island and is in the Tide Viewing Tower of the Shuzhuang Garden. This island is called the piano island and the local people enjoy the piano music. The museum is well laid out and explains the history of pianos. There are many antique pieces that is sure to impress lovers of music. The visitor will leave the museum with knowledge of how the piano is created and the workmanship involved. Entry fee: CNY20 per person
This is a beautiful commercial area with many rows of shop selling local goods and produce. There are restaurants, and stores along the street. The West section of Zhongshan road was declared a motor vehicle free area. This has encouraged people to walk safely down the street and explore the wares. The municipality of Xiamen have awards honoring shops that are honest. There are awards for stores that are good-mannered or trustworthy. The visitor can buy tea, dried meat and dried seafood that Xiamen is famous for. A stroll through this street, will let you absorb the culture and traditions of this town. Many of the shops open by 10:00am and close by 10:00pm.

How to get there ?
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (code:XMN) is on the Northeast end of Xiamen Island. It is about 10 km into downtown Xiamen. This airport has many domestic airlines using it's facilities and linking it to 58 cities in China and 17 foreign cities. Airport Shuttle Bus: There are buses that leave at regular intervals to the Ferry Boat Dock and the Railway Station. The trip takes about 30 minutes and the charges are CNY6. Railway Station Information Line: 0592-2038888 Public Bus: Passengers can walk 200 mts and can board Bus no 27, 37, 81 and L19 to get into downtown Xiamen. Cost per ticket: CNY1 Time: Most of the buses ply late on this route until 00:10 am. Songbai Bus Station Ticket CenterAddress: the exit of Songbai Bus Station, No.211, Lianyue Road Taxis: Just outside the arrival terminal. Charges are CNY8 for the first 3 km and then a charge of CNY2 for extra kilometers. Getting around the city Bus transport is the best option. There are over 100 buses running between the Ferry dock, Xiamen University and the railway station. There are double decker buses too. The taxis are convenient and they follow the meter. Cars and bicycles are available on hire. Bicycles cost CNY20-30 per day, but you need to give a deposit.
