Saint Etienne, a historic city!

Saint-Étienne (English: Saint Stephen) is located in eastern central France 50 km (31 mi) southwest of Lyon. It is a capital of the Loire Department in the Rhone Alps region. It has a population of more than 178,500 inhabitants and a total land area of 79.97 km2 (30.88 sq mi). The city is known as the Saint-Étienne de Furan (after the River Furan, a tributary of the Loire). The city was renowned for its arms manufacturing industry in the 16th century and was known as Armeville or Commune d'Armes (Arms Town) during the French Revolution. Saint Etienne is also a centre for manufacture of ribbons, trim and for metalworking since the 15th century. From the beginning of the 20th century, the city was also famous for coal mining and cycle industry. In 2010, Saint Etienne became the first UNESCO Design city and a member of the Creative Cities network. The city is also one of the leading tourist distinations in Europe.

-Étienne (The mining Museum)

The Musee de la mine (Mining Museum) of Saint-Étienne was founded in 1991. The museum, officially named "Well Couriot or Park Mining Museum" is housed in the last Etienne well buildings (closed in 1973). The well Couriot has an area of 15 hectares, representing the well-preserved mine site and remains that showcases coal mining activity. It was the largest Etienne well in the 20th century and could accommodate nearly 2,000 miners and hundreds of other workers. The mine site was also a former headquarter of the Société Anonyme des Mines de la Loire and was named after its president, Henry Couriot. When the well closes in 1973, the site became a museum and was opened to the public in 1991. Visitors will get the chance to explore the restored buildings of this former coal mining site and visit the great lavabo, the engine room, the lamp room (maintenance workshop lamps), and the gallery. The middle platform buildings dating from the 1940's contains administrative rooms, old boiler lamp, machine room and small sink, and the post-war (large sink and lamp-1948 ). The museum is also a favorite venue for various cultural events, live performances, film screenings, and festivals and is known as the Musée de France (French Museum).

Musée d'art et d'industrie (Museum of Art and Industry)

The Musee d'art et d'industrie (Museum of Art and Industry) is located in the town of Saint-Étienne in the Loire department. The municipality of Saint-Étienne made a fund raising for the construction of this museum in 1833. In 1846, the Museum of art, also served as a library, was built. The former councilor of Etienne, Colombet Alfred appointed Marius Vachon as the museum's first curator. In 1851, a large number of collection amassed by Marshal Oudinot was purchased and was displayed in the museum. The Museum of Art and Industry represents the history of manufacturing industry in Saint Etienne. The museum boasts of their valuable collection of weapons and arms. Weapons from the former arms factory in Saint- Etienne were also deposited in the Museum. It holds the most important collection of arms in France next to the Musee de l'Armee in Paris. Also on display are the collections of woven fabrics, ribbons, textiles, and cycles. -Étienne (Museum of Modern Art)

The Musee d'art moderne (Museum of Modern Art) is situated in the northern entrance of Saint-Etienne near Saint-Priest-en-Jarez municipality. The museum was established in 1987, representing a collection of 19,000 works of art. The Museum of Modern Art boasts of their largest collection of works from the 19th century to the 21st century. The museum showcase an impressive display of international artworks such as paintings, sculpture, photography and designs. In 1947, the collection were systematically expanded and was organized from the 19th century arts to modern arts. The museum also represents the history of photography and visual arts in the 20th century. Most areas of the building constructed in 1987 by Didier Guichard host temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. In recent years big names in international contemporary art were presented such as: Gilbert and George (2005), Yan Pei-Ming (2006), Roman Opalka (2006), the collective Zero (2007), Georg Baselitz (2007), Orlan (2007), Sean Scully (2008), Antony Gormley (2008), Mario Schifano (2009), Richard Nonas (2010), Dennis Oppenheim (2011). The museum regularly offers a wide thematic group exhibition that brings together young artists from around the world such as the “Settlements” in 2004, “Residence” in 2005, “Micro-Narratives” in 2008, “Fragile” in 2009, and “Islands never found” in 2011. -Étienne (The Planetarium)

The Planetarium in Saint-Etienne was established in 1993. It consist of a 12 metre dome that is fully equipped with astronomical simulator, RSA cosmos in space system 6, and DLP projectors (Barco SIM5R). The planetarium can accommodate more than 80 people and offers shows on astronomy and science. The system has a database of astronomical data, including all planets, satellites and small bodies of the solar system and thousands of stars systems. From 2012, the planetarium offers fully stereoscopic 3D film for a total immersion in the cosmos. Visitors can have the chance to explore the space through virtual 3D animated sequences, movie, and interventions from scientific mediator. The Planetarium offers various films that shows how the stars move in the universe, the shape and composition of our galaxy, the emergence of life on Earth, and a lot more. -Étienne – Gorges de la Loire Nature Reserve

Gorges de la Loire is a 312 hectares Nature Reserve located in the town of Saint Etienne. It was created in 1988 near the Loire River which is a popular recreation spot for the people in Saint Etienne. The reserve is managed by the Joint Association of Development of the Gorges de la Loire and FRAPNA Loire. The reserve is rich in bird life with over 160 species found including the very rare circaete Jean-le-white, eagle owl, red kite and many more. Some other bird species are confined in the sunny areas and heathland such as hoopoe, nightjar, and wryneck. The influence of Mediterranean climate allows a large number of insects such as the Spanish beetle (Carabus hispanus ssp Berardi), bees, and butterflies. The southern habitats is home to plant species such as Montpellier maple, and serviceberry. Visitors can explore the fascinating forest, interspersed with moors, green meadows and lawns in rocky areas where you can have a perfect view of the reserve. The Cité du Design

The Cité du Design and Ecole Supérieure d’Art et Design de Saint-Etienne are situated on a historic site of the former arms factory in the city. It consists of three renovated buildings and a Platine where you will find a lecture theater, a couple of exhibition halls, three meeting rooms, a multimedia library, a resource centre, a shop, a designer's office and restaurant. It has an observation platform where visitors can have a perfect view towards the hills and the city. It is also a favorite venue for some famous events such as the Saint Etienne International Design Biennial and the annual exhibition in the city and abroad. Chateau de Rochetaillée

The Chateau de Rochetaillee is a ruined feudal castle located in the city of Saint-Etienne. The castle was constructed around 12th century and was completed in the 16th century. Rochetaillee castle is mainly constructed in sandstone, with some granite and bricks from the Roman era. In 1930, the French Ministry of Culture included the castle on the list of monument historique in France. Visitors will have to walk up to the top of the 653 metres high crystalline dyke to reach this historical castle. The walk is worth the effort since you will be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the valley and the Loire river.

-Étienne Cathedral

The Cathedral of Saint Charles Borromeo (French: Cathedrale Saint-Charles-Borromee) is located in the city of Saint-Etienne. This Roman Catholic church was built from 1912 to1923 and was dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo. The cathedral has been the seat of Saint-Etienne Bishops since December 26, 1970, when the diocese was founded. This neo-Gothic style cathedral is 80 metres (260 ft) long, 30 metres (98 ft) wide and 17 metres (56 ft) from the ground to the roof vault. Inside the church, you will see a couple of historic organs from the 1930's and the one created by A. Durand in 1968. Visitors will be amazed by an impressive design of this historical church.

-Guichard

Stade Geoffroy-Guichard is situated in the city of Saint-Etienne, France. This multipurpose stadium was opened in September 13, 1931. It was named after the Casino retail group founder, Geoffroy-Guichard. The stadium was designed by architect Thierry Meyer and Michael Saidoun and can accommodate more than 35, 616 people. The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard hosted some of the famous tournaments such as the 1984 European Football Championship, Football World Cup 1998, and the Confederation Cup 2003. It was also a venue for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard is one of the favorite stadiums in the world.
