Points of interests / things to see

Kuta Beach

This beach has become one of the must see places for visitors to Kuta since the 1970. In addition to its name as Kuta Beach, many call it Sunset Beach. There are numerous luxury resorts, outstanding restaurants, and numerous clubs along this beach. In total, the beach is about twelve kilometers long and perfect for a long stroll. Although the sand here is ideal for enjoy some classic beach fun, it was causing some difficulties for the restaurant and shop owners in the area. As a result, a two meter white sandstone fence was created along the road by the beach. This wall was added in 2011 and has seriously helped the shops and restaurants reduce the inside sand. Additionally, in 2011 serious efforts began to reduce the clutter along the beach. A ban was put in place against vendors selling food at the beachside. However, these vendors are still allowed to sell both drinks and souvenirs. The surfing opportunities at Kuta Beach are unparalleled. The waves break here in a long systematic way making it easy to catch the ride of a lifetime. This beach is known as the most beautiful in all of Bali. In one visit you will surely understand why.

Bali Bombing Memorial

The first bombing in Bali took place here in Kuta in 2002. In order to remember this difficult time, the city decided to build a permanent memorial commemorating the events. The memorial is located at the site of one of the businesses that was destroyed, Paddy’s Pub which is located on Legian Street. Constructed of amazingly intricate carved stone, the memorial is set with a massive marble plaque. Written on the plaque are all the names and nationalities of those individuals who died as a result of the bombings. Additionally, you can see the national flags of these individuals on site. The memorial was officially dedicated on October 12th of 2004 which marked the second anniversary of the original attack. Since the majority of the victims of these bombings were Australians, both Indonesian and Australian representatives attended the ceremony. In total two hundred and two individuals died in the attacks. Eighty eight of those were Australian and thirty five were Indonesian. If you are in town on the anniversary date of the events, there is a ceremony performed by those who mourn the deaths of those who passed away. How to get there ?

Come on Kuta

The main airport to serve Kuta is the Ngurah Rai International Airport. It is directly south of the city of Kuta. It takes about fifteen minutes to reach the airport via taxi. If you would like to take a prepaid taxi, it will cost about Rp 50,000. If you would like to save a bit, and aren’t carrying too much luggage, you can walk just two hundred meters outside of the airport and grab a metered taxi. These taxis do not pay airport fees, so they are a bit cheaper, although they cannot drive directly into the airport. Another option is to gram a bemo for anywhere between Rp 5,000-10,000. You can also reach Kuta via car. The main Jalan Ngurah Rai bypass comes from the north and the south. Be aware that taking any beach routes, such as the Jalan Raya Seminyak and the Jalan Legian, are usually much more congested. If you are coming from another part of Bali, you can fairly easily catch a bus to Kuta. You can grab a Perama shuttle bus from Sanur, Ubud, and Lovina. To grab an air conditioned bus, you’ll want to catch a ride from a company known as the Trans Sarbagita.
